Theme Of Psychology In The Movie The Sandlot - 1187 Words

â€Å"The Sandlot† is a classic baseball movie in which incorporates a significant amount of sport psychology. Digging deeper down into the details of the movie, you will notice various levels of motivation, leadership, goal-setting, and teamwork. All of these aspects are essential to being successful in sports, mentally and physically. â€Å"The Sandlot† is a movie about a boy, (Scottie Smalls) who is new to the town and motivated to make new friends. Smalls decided to try to make friends with a group of boys who get together everyday to play baseball. At first, Smalls was not accepted by the team because he had never been taught to play the game, until Benny came along and took Scottie under his wing. The boys face competition when a rivalry†¦show more content†¦In addition, this is also displays that the team is outcome oriented, meaning that their main focus is on the result of competitions (Horseman). Being outcome oriented is apart of the achievement goal theory. The achievement goal theory is how someone evaluates and perceives themselves in a sport (Horseman). It is normally broken up into two categories: outcome oriented and task-mastery oriented (Horseman). The difference is that one who is outcome oriented, mainly focuses on the result of competition and someone who is task-mastery orient ed has their main focus on perfecting a skill and evaluating their own skill level. Benny in â€Å"The Sandlot† is an outstanding example of someone who is task-mastery oriented. Benny is constantly trying to perfect his skills in baseball and is highly motivated to learn from his mistakes in order to improve. During the movie, Benny was seen practicing his batting while the other players seemed to be losing interest because he had been practicing for so long. Furthermore, the entire team is shown to have intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the desire to participate in an interest based on internal benefits (Cherry). Smalls and the rest of the Sandlot team, excluding Benny, have intrinsic motivation for baseball because to them, the game is fun. The boys play the game because they enjoy it.
